Whittier's Battle of the Books

Whittier Elementary School hosted its 18th annual “Battle of the Books” competition! Each year, students compete against students in their reading level in the Battle of the Books. On May 11th, students in the 5th grade reading level competed in the annual competition.

In order to participate, students needed to pass the Accelerated Reading (AR) test for A Long Way to Chicago by Richard Peck, The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare, My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett, The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, The Black Stallion by Walter Farley, and Call it Courage by Armstrong Sperry.

Ann Lind, 4th grade teacher, started the Battle of the Books competition in 1999 with the help of her friend Shari Florence. Ann’s daughter was in fourth grade at that time. She said she is happy to provide a competition that makes students excited about reading.

Thank you Ms. Lind for continuing the tradition of the Battle of the Books at Whittier Elementary!
